DIY or Professional Driveway Painting: What It Really Costs You

Comparisons ·

Painting a driveway yourself saves the labour but not the work: you still need to clean it properly, fill the cracks, cut in every edge and apply two even coats. For absent owners in particular, a professional refresh at approximately €15/m² + IVA is often the cheaper way to get a finish that lasts.

What does a DIY driveway job actually involve?

The same stages as a professional job. The surface has to be thoroughly cleaned, the cracks filled, the edges painted by hand and two coats applied evenly, with drying time respected between them according to the product data sheet.

This article does not give step-by-step instructions or product recommendations. Its purpose is to help you compare the real cost of each route, so you can decide with the full picture.

What would you need to buy or hire?

At minimum: a pressure washer capable of cleaning concrete properly, crack filler, brushes and rollers for both cut-in and open areas, masking materials, protective equipment and enough coating for two full coats over your whole area.

Each of these has a price, and the coating itself is only part of it. Buying the wrong product for an outdoor driveway, or not enough of it, is one of the most common reasons DIY jobs end up costing more than planned.

Whatever you choose, read the product data sheet. It is the only reliable source for coverage, drying times and suitability for vehicle traffic.

Then there is your time. Cleaning, filling, cutting in and two coats on a villa driveway is physical work spread over more than one session, and it has to fit around the weather.

Where do DIY jobs usually go wrong?

In the preparation. Paint applied over dirt, algae or a chalky surface has little to grip, and paint over unfilled cracks shows them straight away.

  • Cleaning that removes visible dirt but not the loose, chalky top layer.
  • Cracks left open or filled unevenly, so they read through the colour.
  • Edges rolled rather than cut in, leaving marks on walls and posts.
  • A single thick coat instead of two, giving an uneven finish.
  • Driving on the surface before the data sheet allows.

When a DIY coating peels, the next step is removing the loose paint before anyone can recoat, which adds to the eventual professional quote.

What does the professional route cost?

With us, approximately €15/m² + IVA, including pressure washing, routine crack filling, cut-in and two coats of synthetic resin paint. For a 60 m² driveway, that is €900 before tax.

The driveway painting cost page explains how the rate is built and what it excludes.

Is DIY realistic if you live abroad?

Usually not. A refresh needs dry weather and waiting time between stages, as set by the product data sheet, and that is hard to fit into a short visit. Bad weather can also stop the work part-way through.

A professional job can be organised entirely from abroad: you send photos, we confirm the price and a key-holder opens the gate. Photos of the stages can be sent to you over WhatsApp.

When does DIY make sense?

For a very small area, if you live at the property, have the time and enjoy the work. Even then, the cleaning stage is worth doing well, and our pressure washing cost page explains why it matters so much.

If you start and find more cracking than expected, the crack repair cost page explains where routine filling ends and structural problems begin.

How do I compare the two for my driveway?

Price the DIY route honestly, including equipment, materials for two coats and your time, then compare it with our figure. The quote calculator gives our guide price instantly.

If you decide on a professional, our article on mistakes when comparing quotes will help you choose well.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to paint my driveway myself?

You save the labour, but you still pay for equipment, materials for two coats and your own time, and the preparation is just as demanding. If the result fails, removing loose paint adds to the next job. For an owner, especially one abroad, the professional route can work out cheaper overall.

What does a professional driveway refresh cost?

With us, approximately €15 per m² + IVA, including pressure washing, routine crack filling, brush cut-in and two coats of synthetic resin paint. A 60 m² driveway comes to about €900 before tax, confirmed from photos of the surface and the access.

Why don't you give DIY instructions?

Because the details depend on the specific product and surface, and the product data sheet is the right source for them. This article focuses on comparing the cost and effort of each route so you can decide, rather than on how to do the work.

What is the most common DIY mistake?

Poor preparation. Paint applied over dirt, algae or a chalky surface, or over open cracks, does not bond or look right. Cutting corners on cleaning is the most frequent reason a DIY coating peels and has to be removed before recoating.

Can I just do the cleaning myself and pay you for the painting?

Our rate includes cleaning because the paint depends on it. If you have already cleaned the surface, send photos and we will assess it, but in most cases we would still wash it as part of our preparation so the coating goes onto a surface we have prepared ourselves.

Can you fix a DIY job that has started peeling?

Usually yes, but the loose paint has to be removed first so the new coats can bond. That adds preparation compared with a surface that was never painted. Send close-up photos of the peeling and we will tell you whether the guide price still applies.

How long should I wait before driving on a DIY coating?

Follow the product data sheet. Drying and traffic times depend on the product, the temperature and the humidity, and driving on the surface too soon is a common cause of marks and failure. We do not quote a fixed time from memory.

Is DIY possible if I am only in Spain for a short visit?

It is difficult. A refresh needs dry weather and drying time between stages, and bad weather can stop it part-way. Owners on short visits usually find a professional job, organised from abroad with photos, more practical. A key-holder can open the gate for us while you are away.

Do you recommend a particular paint for DIY?

No. We do not recommend products or brands. We use synthetic resin paint in two coats on our own jobs, and we refer to the product data sheet for its properties. For a DIY job, choose a product suitable for outdoor vehicle areas and follow its data sheet.

When does DIY make sense?

For a small area, if you live at the property, have the time and are prepared to do the preparation properly. For larger driveways, stamped patterns or properties you visit only occasionally, a professional refresh is usually the more reliable choice.
