Recolouring or Replacing Your Driveway: An Honest Cost Comparison
Recolouring a sound driveway costs far less than replacing it, because you pay only for preparation and colour, not demolition, rubble removal and new concrete. Replacement only becomes the better spend when the base has failed, slabs are broken through or the levels are wrong.
Send us a photo and the m²What does each option actually involve?
A refresh keeps everything you already have. The surface is pressure washed, routine cracks are filled, the edges are cut in by brush and two coats of synthetic resin paint go on top.
Replacement starts by removing what you have. The old concrete or paving is broken out, the rubble is loaded and taken away, the base is prepared and a new surface is laid and finished.
| Stage | Recolouring | Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Demolition | None | Old surface broken out |
| Waste | No rubble | Construction and demolition waste to manage |
| Base | Existing base kept | Base prepared or rebuilt |
| Surface | Cleaned, repaired, two coats | New concrete, imprinted concrete or paving |
| Disruption | Area closed while coats dry, per data sheet | Longer works with machinery on site |
How much does recolouring cost compared with replacing?
We can only give you our own price: approximately €15/m² + IVA for a full refresh. A 90 m² driveway therefore comes to about €1,350 before tax.
We do not lay new driveways, so we do not publish replacement prices. What we can say is what replacement adds: demolition, waste management under Real Decreto 105/2008, a new base and a new surface, none of which appear in a refresh.
When is recolouring the right choice?
When the driveway is structurally fine but looks tired. Faded colour, patchy stains, dull stamped patterns and fine weathering cracks are all exactly what a refresh is designed for.

The Marbella reference driveway was faded and cracked, with a sound base. After washing, crack filling, cut-in and two coats it had a deep, glossy and even finish, without a single slab being lifted. See the imprinted concrete cost page for how stamped surfaces are priced.
When is replacement the only sensible option?
When the problem is under the surface. A refresh cannot fix a base that is sinking or moving, slabs that are broken right through, or levels that send water towards the house.
- Cracks that keep widening after being filled.
- Sections that have dropped, tilted or rock under a car.
- Large areas broken through or crumbling.
- Drainage problems caused by the slope of the surface.
In those cases we tell you from the photos, before any price is agreed. Painting does not cure subsidence, and we would rather lose the job than sell a refresh that fails.
Is there a middle way?
Sometimes. If only one section is broken, a paving contractor can replace it first, and we then refresh the whole area so the colour matches throughout. The two jobs are quoted separately.
For minor defects such as small holes, spalled patches and chipped edges, the repair is part of our service. The crack repair cost page explains what is included in the rate and what is assessed separately.
What about the cost over time?
Any outdoor surface needs looking after. A recoloured driveway will eventually need cleaning and a further coat, at intervals that depend on the product, the sun and the traffic, as set out in the product data sheet.
Our guide on costs outside the quote covers maintenance and the other items to budget for. The driveway painting cost page shows the base figure for plain concrete.
How do I find out which one my driveway needs?
Send us a wide photo from each end and close-ups of the worst cracks. If cracks look structural, we say so; if the base looks sound, we send a written price for the refresh.
Either way, you get a clear answer in English, and you can take it to a paving contractor if replacement is the honest recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to recolour or replace a driveway?
Recolouring a sound driveway costs far less, because there is no demolition, no rubble, no new base and no new surface. Our guide rate is approximately €15/m² + IVA, including cleaning, crack filling and two coats. Replacement only makes sense when the base or the slab has failed.
How much does it cost to recolour a 90 m² driveway?
At the guide rate, 90 m² × €15 = €1,350 before IVA. With 21% IVA that comes to €1,633.50, or €1,485 if the reduced 10% rate for home renovation applies. The figure is confirmed from photos of the surface and the access.
Why don't you publish replacement prices?
Because we do not lay new driveways, and we only publish prices we actually charge. Replacement involves demolition, waste management, base preparation and a new surface. Ask paving contractors to itemise those stages so you can compare with a refresh fairly.
Can recolouring fix a sinking driveway?
No. Painting does not cure subsidence. If the base is moving, cracks will reopen through any new coating. The base has to be investigated and fixed by a specialist first; we do not carry out structural or ground work. Once the base is stable, a refresh can follow.
How do I know if my driveway needs replacing?
Warning signs include cracks that keep widening after filling, sections that have dropped or rock under a car, large areas broken through and water running towards the house. Send close-up photos and we will tell you honestly whether a refresh makes sense.
Can I replace part of the driveway and recolour the rest?
Yes. A paving contractor can replace the damaged section first, then we refresh the whole area so the colour is consistent. The two jobs are quoted separately, and we price the refresh once the new section is ready. That keeps the finish uniform from the gate to the garage.
Does recolouring work on imprinted concrete?
Yes. Imprinted concrete is one of the most common surfaces we refresh. The pattern stays in place; only the colour and the visible cracks change. On the Marbella reference job, the faded stone pattern was brought back to a deep, glossy, even tone.
Is there less disruption with recolouring?
Yes. There is no machinery breaking out concrete, no skip and no rubble. The area is closed while the coats dry, for as long as the product data sheet requires. Replacement involves a longer period of works on site. That matters most on a villa that is let between seasons.
What maintenance does a recoloured driveway need?
Routine cleaning and, eventually, a further coat. The intervals depend on the product, sun exposure and traffic, and the product data sheet is the reference. We do not publish a lifespan figure we cannot support. Ask us for the data sheet guidance when the job is handed over.
Will you tell me if replacement is the better option?
Yes. If the photos show a failed base, broken-through slabs or structural cracks, we tell you before quoting. It is better for you to spend money on the right fix than on a refresh that will not last. You can then take our photos and comments to a paving contractor.
